Secretary Rice meets with UAE leaders
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met with H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and other Arab diplomats in Abu Dhabi to discuss a variety of regional issues of common interest. Also present at the meeting were H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Anwar Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and the newly appointed Ambassador to Washington, H.E. Yousef Al Otaiba.
UAE airlines announce big orders for Boeing aircraft at Farnborough International Airshow
Ethiad Airways, the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates, led the way at the Farnborough International Airshow by announcing an agreement with Boeing to buy 45 mid-size transcontinental passenger jets worth $9.4 billion. FlyDubai, the new Dubai-based regional low-cost carrier, announced a $4 billion deal for 54 Boeing 737 passenger jets.
US officials hail the UAE’s decision to forgive Iraqi debt and name Baghdad Ambassador
The UAE has cancelled billions of dollars of Iraqi debt and has pledged to restore a full diplomatic mission in Baghdad. UAE President, HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, stated that he hoped canceling the debt would lighten the "economic burden" facing Iraqis and he urged the country to unite behind Prime Minister al-Maliki's government. A White House National Security Council spokesman said, “we appreciate the Emiratis' recognition that a secure and prosperous Iraq is in the interests of everyone in the region.”
Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. and ConocoPhillips sign gas deal
ADNOC and ConocoPhillips signed a deal to develop sour gas reserves in the UAE’s Shah field. They are to set up a joint venture firm to manage and operate the Shah project and will “jointly share” any investments in developing sour gas reservoirs.
